Vāra 01

In Vedic astrology, Vāra means the weekday lord—the planet that rules the day (Sunday = Sun, Monday = Moon, etc.). In the teachings of Sanjay Rath, Vāra is not just a calendar label but a core limb of the Pañcāṅga that reveals the active devatā, planetary mood, karmic flow, and auspiciousness of the day.
Vāra = the planetary ruler of the weekday, forming one of the five limbs of the Pañcāṅga. Sanjay Rath emphasizes that Vāra shows:

  • The presiding deity of the day
  • The type of karma supported (śubha/āśubha)
  • The strength or weakness of the ruling graha
  • How the day interacts with your personal chart
  • Whether certain actions should be initiated or avoided

This is elaborated in his Pañcāṅga–Vāra teachings and lectures

Vāra (Weekday) Lord Key Themes (as taught in SJC tradition)
Ravi-vāra (Sunday) Sun Authority, vitality, initiation, dharma
Soma-vāra (Monday) Moon Mind, nourishment, stability, healing
Maṅgala-vāra (Tuesday) Mars Courage, conflict, surgery, discipline
Budha-vāra (Wednesday) Mercury Learning, trade, communication
Guru-vāra (Thursday) Jupiter Wisdom, expansion, blessings
Śukra-vāra (Friday) Venus Relationships, arts, wealth
Śani-vāra (Saturday) Saturn Karma, endurance, obstacles, purification

From his Pañcāṅga teachings and SJC lineage:

1. Vāra = the “Mood” of the Day

The ruling graha sets the bhāva (emotional and karmic tone) of the day. Example:

  • Sun-day supports leadership and visibility.
  • Saturn-day supports austerity and long-term work.

2. Vāra must be read with Tithi & Nakṣatra

Rath stresses that Vāra alone cannot determine auspiciousness. The triad of Vāra–Tithi–Nakṣatra determines whether a day is truly śubha.

3. Dagdha Vāra (Burnt Weekdays)

In his tradition, certain weekdays become “burnt” depending on the Lagna. A burnt Vāra weakens the planet and makes the day unsuitable for major actions.

4. Vāra Devatā

Each weekday has a ruling deity (e.g., Surya, Chandra, Skanda, etc.). Rath often connects Vāra to mantra, upāsanā, and remedial timing.

5. Vāra in Muhūrta

He teaches that:

  • Sun, Jupiter, Venus days are generally auspicious.
  • Mars and Saturn days require caution unless the activity matches their nature.
  • Moon and Mercury days are neutral but depend heavily on Tithi.

Why Vāra Matters in Jyotiṣa (SJC Perspective)

According to lineage:

  • It shows which graha is “awake” and influencing karma on that day.
  • It determines success or failure of new ventures.
  • It guides remedial practices (e.g., Sunday for Surya mantra, Saturday for Śani).
  • It influences daily predictions and praśna (horary).
