Saturn in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna

There are various ways to assess the dignity of planets:

Few are related to the placement of planets in a specific sign, regardless of the Lagna. When the Sun goes to Aries, the Sun gets exalted and is very strong.
We can also check the dignity of planets based on their placement in a specific house, when counted from Lagna e.g. when Jupiter is in Lagna, it is considered to be having Digbala i.e. directional strength and is very strong.
Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna (MKS) is one of the ways to assess the dignity of planets, which is based on placement of planets in a specific house, when counted from Lagna. Sa goes to MKS when it is in 1H.

Meaning

Maraṇa means death i.e.
- Something is dying, vanishing from existence
- Something is about to be destroyed
- Maraṇa is the process, by which we arrive at the final result, mṛtyu
- It is as if, some aspect of that planet is taken away by Rudra
Kāraka is significator, and
Sthāna means place

Therefore, Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna (MKS) means certain placement of planets that makes them very vulnerable, as if something is dying inside. We may consider them dangerously positioned. It is as if some aspect of that planet is going away. It is as if the planet is offended and feeling disgusted with the native. The planet will draw native’s energy, his consciousness to that specific house (where it is in MKS) i.e. to that aspect of his life.

When Sa is in Lagna, he will be considered in MKS » Sa will draw native’s energy to Lagna and the intelligence of the native may not support him to take the correct decisions. Likewise, other results associated with Sa’s significations and lordship etc will also get impacted adversely.

Why Sa is in MKS in 1H (Lagna)?

Lagna is about intelligence, about good health with the Sun as its kāraka. The role of Sa is just the opposite as it is about diseases, it is about darkness i.e. lack of knowledge. Hence, Sa does not feel comfortable in the Lagna and feels like dying.

There is a role reversal between the Su and Sa.
The Su likes to be in Lagna as its kāraka and goes to MKS in 12H.
Sa, on the other hand, likes to be in the 12H as its kāraka and goes to MKS in Lagna.

We can also understand it from another perspective. 9H denotes pūrva puṇya or karmas of the past life. If we take 9H as Lagna of the past life and examine MKS position of Sa (1H):

Count from 9H to 1H » Sa is in 5^th house
The 5H position of Sa is not considered good because it denotes durmantrae. Sa is in MKS in this life because the native has done some bad mantra in the previous life. Due to those bad mantras, the native will suffer.
In this life, the native will be attracted to such religious and spiritual practices which will be destructive nature. Hence, one needs to be careful when Sa is in MKS. The native should guard and protect himself beaus the more he goes towards these energies, the more he will get destructed. These energies will start destroying and dissolving everything in his life

Results of Sa in MKS

When a planet goes to MKS, he is craving for attention. He will eclipse native’s mind in the area, where he is placed. It is as if, the native’s intelligence is being eclipsed by that planet. Specifically, Sa MKS is lagna itself, hence, Sa in 1H means something is dying in Lagna. One or more of the following can be dying or decaying:

Kārakatvas: Maraṇa avasthā of the kāraka is one of the implications i.e. the kāraka of the MKS planet is dying. So, it is the kārakatwas of the planet which will take the hit. But there are more than one kind of Kārakatwas:
Graha Kārakatva: if Su is in MKS in 12H – ‘father’ is one of the graha kārakatwas of the Sun- then the father can get impacted.
Likewise, if Sa is in MKS in 1H – as Sa is āyuṣa kārakae. it is the significator of longevity » there is danger to life, particularly in childhood because Lagna is childhood
Other significations of Sa can also take a hit like intelligence, decision making, mental health, stay in solitude, prison, issues from tax authorities, a person being unreliable for work, lack of discipline, laziness, lack of focus etc.
Bhava Kārakatva: if Me is in MKS in 4H – mother, social norms are few of the kārakatwas of 4H – then the mother can be impacted or the native may not follow social norms
Likewise, if Sa is in MKS in 1H: As Lagna denotes one’s intelligence » Sa in MKS can hit native’s intelligence
Lagna also means one’s connection with his home, his family » Sa in MKS can break that connection between native and his home; he may give up his family; he may let go off his saṁskāra that he has got from his home.
Lordship: Sa in MKS can also impact the significations of one or both the houses, it lords.
Conjunction: If any other planet is conjoined Sa in MKS – the lordship of the conjoined planet can also take a hit, even if that planet is Ju.

What can aggravate the maleficence of MKS Saturn?

Malefic aspects, particularly graha dṛsṭi on MKS Sa can enhance its maleficence:

Dṛśṭi of eka-pāpa (one malefic planet) – effect can be managed if other things are favourable like kāraka is strong and / or Ju is aspecting Sa
Dṛśṭi of dvi-pāpa (two malefic planets) – tricky to manage, require stronger remedies; life will be challenging
Dṛśṭi of tri-pāpa (three or more malefic planets) – unlikely to manage, it can unleash full MKS energy

Is there something good about it too?

To see the goodness, count the 3^rd planet in Vāra cakra, from the MKS planet:

When Sa is in MKS, the 3^rd planet will be Ketu (Sa » Ra » Ke)
Due to Ke, Sa in MKS will make the native very strong in calculations, very good with numbers. It is because Ke will work fantastic in native’s chart just because Sa is in Lagna.
In fact, the native will be a mastermind but will seek to paint a grossly pessimistic picture.

Protection of MKS Saturn

Kāraka: When a planet is in MKS, examine the strength of the kāraka for that bhava. The kāraka for that bhava must be very strong and benevolent, as he is to decide how he can save the MKS planet. MKS position for Sa is 1H » The kāraka for 1H is the Sun. So, the Sun must be very strong. The Sun is the one, who has the power to protect MKS Sa, because the Sun, the kāraka is the Hand of God.

Kāraka’s dignity is also to be considered:
If kāraka Sun is strong, it can take the negative energy of Sa and make it completely positive by bringing about transformation; e.g. if Su is in its own house, he is at the tattva level and will be benevolent to MKS Sa

If kāraka Sun is not strong, it can further complicate the situation; e.g. if Su is in a bad house or is afflicted by he any malefic(s), kāraka will not protect MKS Sa

Jupiter’s aspect: If a planet in MKS is influenced (aspected, conjoined) by jīva [Bṛhspati (guru) as a significator of Śiva], renewed life is guaranteed. If Ju aspects MKS Sa, then Sa is not really dying, but is recovering from its curses, from its problems and from even a death like situation. Hence, the influence of Ju on MKS Sa is one of the greatest blessings that can come to any horoscope

Jupiter’s dignity is also to be considered, e.g. if Ju is nicely placed, like in any good yoga, in own house or is exalted (the best) – that will be like the redeeming power of God. Aspect of such kind of Ju on the MKS Sa will completely protect him.

Yoga with another planet: If another planet is any kind of yoga (conjunction, exchange etc.) with an MKS planet, the other planet will take the hit and suffer similar problems, but the primary MKS planet will recover. You may think of a situation when one is drowning, it clutches to another for help, and then the other shall drown.

For example, take Aries Lagna with Me and Ve in 6H. Me is exalted and Ve is in MKS (and also debilitated). In this case, Me is conjoined an MKS planet, Ve » So, it is the other planet, Me who will actually take the hit, but MKS Ve will rather be recovering from the problem

Likewise, if any other planet is conjoined MKS Sa – the lordship of the conjoined planet will take a hit, but MKS Sa will recover

Sa in MKS + Exalted: It can apply only to Libra Lagna as it is only in Libra Lagna – Sa can both be in MKS by being in Lagna and also be exalted. In such a case, Sa has the purity of Viṣṇu » the MKS impact is removed by the grace of Kūrma Avatāra

Sa in MKS + Own house OR mūlatrikoṇa house: It can apply either to Capricorn Lagna or to Aquarius Lagna

As it is only in Capricorn Lagna – Sa can both be in MKS by being in Lagna and also be in own house
And it is only in Aquarius Lagna – Sa can both be in MKS by being in lagna and also be in mūlatrikoṇa house
In both these cases, Sa has the tattva bala » the MKS impact is removed by the grace of Śiva

Case studies

Lois Nettleton

Lois Nettleton was a beauty queen before she launched her professional acting career. She was an Emmy-winning character actress who prioritized the craft of acting over the pursuit of Hollywood.

Sa is in MKS in her horoscope. Sa can adversely impact her life through its kārakatwas (e.g. longevity, work etc.) or through its lordship (3H, 4H) etc. Let us see if there are any protections available to her:

Kāraka: The Sun is in Leo (own house) and also in Digbala (10H) – that makes the kāraka, the Sun very strong. So, it has the power to act as the Hand of God and lift Sa up from its MKS. When Su is in 10H, it is like Indra has woken up in Lagna. This also gives the native good work, consequent amount of money, nice friends and some good advisors:

She was comfortably well-off and financially secure. She earned a steady, upper-middle-class income through her relentless 50-year career

She had deep, loyal, and lifelong friendships, particularly with fellow actors, theatre peers, and creative professionals who shared her intense passion for the arts.

Her true “advisors” were her acting teachers and peers in New York. As a lifetime member of the Actors Studio, she was surrounded by legendary masters of “The Method”. These mentors did not advise her on how to make money; they advised her on how to protect the integrity of her craft, pushing her to prioritize complex characters over lucrative studio contracts

If we see closely, the kāraka Sun is in gaṇḍānta and also afflicted by Ma (too much of fire); which brought some kind of inconsistency (frequent changes – start, stop, start again) to her work:
- Due to this, the Sun could not drag her solely to its field of music, though she occasionally integrated music into her stage

She refused to be typecast or “settle down” into one specific genre, shifting continuously from tragedy to sitcoms, sci-fi, and westerns. She preferred to travel freely between New York theatre, Los Angeles television, and independent film sets based purely on where the best scripts were. In a famous 1985 interview with the Los Angeles Times, she stated: “It takes courage to be… a gypsy actor like I am. I’m a character actress. I always wanted to be as different in everything as possible.

Jupiter’s aspect: Ju is having graha drṣṭi on MKS Sa and not only that, Ju by itself is in the sign Pisces and conjoined 9L Mo. This aspect of Ju was one of the strongest factors, which worked in her favour.

The aspect of such strong Ju transformed the MKS energy of Sa (her being pessimistic, taking wrong decisions, lazy, tax evasions, unprofessional) to positive energy of Sa by making her disciplined, committed, focused, responsible and intense.

Ju conjunction with Mo (signifying mother) made Lois extremely devoted to her mother. She took care of her mother, Virginia, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease. When her mother became severely ill, she chose family over fame without hesitation.

To become her mother’s caregiver, she packed up her life in New York (East coast) and moved to Los Angeles, California (West coast), where her mother was living. As Ju made Sa positive – Sa inculcated caring attitude in Lois and made her travel to Western direction).

Theatre was Nettleton’s “first love,” and she deeply desired to remain in New York City to concentrate heavily on prestigious Broadway productions. But this movement meant she had to sacrifice on theatre and move over to TV and films.

Sa is the lord of 4H signifying, inter-alia, her mother. A pure MKS Sa might have impacted her mother and let her in solitude. But here due to Ju’s blessings, Sa ensured that Lois was with her mother to take care of her i.e. Sa protected its houses.

Sa by itself was afflicted by only one malefic, Mars. But the strong Kāraka, the Sun and Jupiter’s aspect protected Saturn. They diluted the maraṇa energy of Sa and transformed it positively, by making her a successful actress (body related work blessed by Saturn), made her move towards Saturn’s direction (from East to West) and gave her a long life of 80 years.

Sydney Simpson

Sydney Brooke Simpson is the eldest daughter of former NFL star O.J. Simpson. When she was 8 years old, her mother was brutally murdered.

Sa is in MKS in her horoscope. Sa can adversely impact her life through its kārakatwas [e.g. forced to live privately (kind of solitude), mental disease (like some kind of depression) etc.] or through its lordship (3H, 4H) etc. Let us see if there are any protections available to her:

Kāraka: The Sun is in debility and also in MKS in 12H. The protection for MKS Su can be obtained through 12H Karka Sa, which again is in MKS. On top of that, Su is severely afflicted by Ra-Ke axis. So, the kāraka is absolutely weak and not in a position to protect MKS Sa.

Jupiter’s aspect: Ju does not have graha drṣṭi on MKS Sa, which means there is not going to be any kind of relief from maraṇa energy of Sa.

It is also to note that Ju is debilitated and also in MKS, so Ju does not have that inherent protection power in the first place.

The karaka for 3H, Ma, being LL in 11H provided some kind of relief to MKS Ju

Ma represents younger brother. Sydney’s biggest anchor in life has been her younger brother, Justin Simpson. Rather than looking outward to a mentor, the two siblings have relied entirely on one another to navigate their complex family history and quietly build their careers in Florida real estate. So, Ju supported her through her younger brother.

Ju is having graha drṣṭi on MKS Su (though Karka Sa is not protecting MKS Su). We can say that, unlike Sa, there is some hope for MKS Su to recover and provide work to Sydney to carry on with her life.
- Su being 10L in 12H gave her work at a foreign location. She moved very far from West cost to the East coast, which was kind of a foreign location only. She manages a few low-income single-family homes and apartment units (Su with Ke – built property).

We can also see that Ju in this case has rāśi drṣṭi on MKS Sa – that tells that eventually there can be a relief provided you go away from Sa. Unlike the previous case, where Lois moved to the West (towards the direction of Saturn), here Sydney moved from California (West) to Florida (East). When he moved away from the direction of Saturn i.e. to the East – she could manage to breath and had some private life.

Both the Kāraka, Sun and Ju could not provide protection to Sydney. This resulted in activation of maraṇa energy of Sa.

MKS Sa is conjoined Mo » due to conjunction, Sa passed over the maraṇa energy to the Moon (mother)

Mo is debilitated + MKS Sa is the lord of 4H (again, it is the significator for mother)
- MKS Sa had a severe hit on her mother. When she was 8 years old, her mother was brutally murdered. MKS Sa and Mo in the house of Ma (Scorpio) – brutal murdered with a knife (Ma)

MKS Sa + Mo in Lagna also led to psychological impact and potential post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression resulting from her mother’s tragic death.

Mo is lord of 9H (representing father too) – she was separated from her father post this incident and they got united only when they moved away from Sa, to the Eastern direction.

Though Sa passed over the maraṇa energy to the Moon, due to its conjunction with Sa, still Sa continued to chase her in one way or the other:
- Forced her to spend the rest of her life privately (kind of solitude), away from masses
- Troubled her father by giving him a chronic disease which eventually led to his demise

Hence, it is imperative that if a planet is in MKS, the kāraka for that bhava must be strong and Ju must protect the MKS planet by its graha drṣṭi; else the maraṇa energy will have a free play.
