Jupiter in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna

Written by Kris Langley

Guru and guide, Pt. Sanjay Rath

ॐ गुरवे नमः

Parāśara states that Jupiter is the permanent significator of happiness, and of vast and comprehensive knowledge. Jupiter is strongest in the East, at sunrise. One receives the blessing of Jupiter when saying prayers at this time, or starting any new event when he is present and in strength. Ākāśa is the space or sky element that holds everything together. It is everywhere and all inclusive. When Jupiter has a favorable aspect upon a graha, that graha is supported and lifted to more beneficial state. Jupiter governs speech, which has the quality of ākāśa. When strong, Jupiter speaks after consideration and therefore speaks wise words.

Ākāśa brings good luck, generosity and an aptitude towards good actions. Jupiter is the Brahmin, persons who are priests and intellectuals, leading a pure life and performing righteous deeds in order to benefit society. The sattva guṇa of Jupiter brings light to the mind, soul and senses, and meaning to our life. Consciousness and enlightenment rise when sattva guṇa is strong, bringing peace and joy. Jātaka Pārijāta states that Jupiter is the lord of the Rg Veda, and is the advisor and counselor. Guru can remove ignorance and empower your mind toward good thoughts and deeds. In our physical world, Jupiter manifests as a guru in our life who seeks to guide us on the spiritual path. Jupiter is the greatest benefic as he is the kāraka for wealth, children and fortune. He gives knowledge and grace, and seeks to protect life as he is the jīva kāraka. Jupiter rules sweets, therefore ruling fruit itself and phala, the fruit of life. Jupiter is सिच्चदानन्द, saccidānanda, truth, consciousness, and bliss.

Effects of Jupiter in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna (MKS)

Jātaka Pārijāta (VII.34-36) states that when a graha is placed in its maraṇa bhāva of the 3rd house it suffers because it feels like it is dying. And like a dying person, it will cling to whomever is around for help. In this way, the effects of the maraṇa are given to grahas joining the maraṇa graha. When Jupiter is in maraṇa kāraka sthāna (MKS), sattva guṇa is dying and the kāraka Mars is coming to beat you. The native has to contend with violence, enmity, and loss of vitality. Seeing the houses Jupiter lords will show how the death like suffering specifically manifests.

Those bhāvas which Jupiter lords will have the maraṇa experiences for those natives. When Jupiter is in maraṇa it has difficulty with guru figures. Jupiter MKS means the Guru is about to die and thus feels compelled to pass on his knowledge to his śiṣyas. The torch has to be passed on, giving the responsibility to others. This means there has to be a transition from one guru to the other; transmission of the spiritual bastion. The most powerful upadeśas will come. This is the house of Īśāna. The native has to give up what he has or he won’t get mokṣa. He will pass on the secrets to one chief student to carry on the lineage. Jupiter in MKS in any divisional chart shows a giving problem. That varga lacks wisdom. The graha in MKS will give death like suffering, but not necessarily death, unless there are other negative indications.

Just like other MKS grahas, grahas joined an MKS Jupiter will suffer, along with the lordships. If Jupiter is the lagna lord then health is affected, especially if the kāraka Sun is poorly placed.

Using pacakādi sambandha, we can see the 6th house from Jupiter’s MKS placement to see who or what Jupiter does not like, and therefore also suffers. For Jupiter MKS, the 6th from the 3rd house is the 8th house, signifying health and/or debts (rṇa) that are areas of suffering for the native with this placement. Along with the Ātma Kāraka (AK), which shows the soul’s desire for incarnating, MKS experiences are destined to occur in one’s life because these are reasons for which the native was born due to past life experiences. We see the 9th house of the kālapūruṣa chakra and count to the MKS bhāva to see which past actions have contributed to our rebirth.

As Dhanu is the natural 9th house, we count from there to the 3rd house. This is seven bhāvas, and arrives at 7th house of love and war. A guru or a priest does not belong in such environments, thus experiences tremendous pain, sorrow and disgust. The suffering is so great that he feels as if he may die. The inner turmoil and outer triggering experiences cause the native to put great focus on the lordships and bhāvas that are damaged by this terrible affliction. He wants to find a way out. Sometimes he can. Sometimes this comes naturally, sometimes with help, and sometimes not at all. Jupiter MKS indicates that there was adharmic activity in this area of life In a past incarnation. The native has now come to pay the karmic debt and right the wrongs of the past. Suffering is experienced to learn these lessons and to support the native in purification of thought and action. The soul yearns to grow and will thus choose painful experiences in order to correct wrongdoing and evolve.

Remedial Measures

There are circumstances when the MKS graha can come out of this death like suffering. If the graha is in its own sign (Śiva’s blessing), exaltation (Viṣṇu’s blessing), or if it receives rāśi dṛṣṭi from the bhāva lord(s) (Śakti’s blessing). Additionally, there is a siddhi hidden within each MKS graha. This can be found by counting three grahas from the MKS graha in the vara chakra order. For Jupiter MKS, this would be Saturn. Saturn teaches discipline, asceticism, structure, labor, and gaining wisdom from suffering. This siddhi guides the native, bringing light and hope to a dark place. For Jupiter MKS, Saturn’s siddhi can cleanse Jupiter of its past ignorance and indulgence of negative behaviors related to partnerships and aggressive actions.

Illustration 1: Inayat Khan – Indian professor of musicology, singer, exponent of the Sarasvatī vīṇā, poet, philosopher, writer, and pioneer of the transmission of Sufism to the West.

Inayat Khan has Mīna lagna with lagna lord Jupiter MKS in Vrṣabha joined Saturn, other lagna lord Ketu, and Upapada lagna (UL).

An MKS graha brings Rāhu energy to the native and shares that energy with grahas in the same bhāva, in this case with Saturn and Ketu. MKS Jupiter as lagna lord indicates health problems may occur and the kāraka of lagna must be checked. Here, the Sun is in dighīna, joined a vakri and astaṅgata Mercury, indicating health can be problematic. His vara lord is Mercury, confirming that health is an issue he must contend with. As it is vakri, it gives results in the opposite sign of 10th house Dhanu with HL and A7, and is the 10th house kāraka. Anitya Jupiter in MKS indicates its importance in resolving this karma through work. As Jupiter lords the 1st house and 10th house, and is placed in the 3rd house, these bhāvas will be adversely impacted with death like suffering; health, work, inimical situations, and communication will be areas of concern for the native as they are negatively impacted and attention is needed here.

Because these areas of life are painful to the native, there is continuous thought and effort aimed at bringing relief to them.

Jupiter is yuti Saturn and has thus shared its MKS experience with its siddhi graha. They work together to help Inayat pay for his past deeds, learn his lessons, and perform the duties that lay before him. Jupiter MKS wants to give its knowledge and Saturn wants to help him in this effort. Jupiter is in the 11th house from his AK Venus, indicating he will see much gain and pain from working in community, all at the behest of his guru. Because the 11th house is an upachāya, it can bring both accolades for achievements, and also danḍa, or punishment. Jupiter, Saturn and Ketu are in the Venusian sign of Vrṣabha. His teaching of Sufism was intended to spread love, harmony and beauty and he emphasized oneness of all faiths. Vrṣabha is the natural 2nd house of वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्, Vasudeva Kutumbakam, “the world is one family”. This was Inayat’s aim in spreading Sufism around the globe. Moon as the other lord of Vrṣabha placed in the 12th house, revealing this universality of oneness as we take our minds into retreat and silence.

Moon is in the philosophical sign of Kumbha, and Venus is in the watery sign of Karka in the 5th house of love and devotion.

The yuti of MKS Jupiter joined 11th and 12th lord Saturn played a significant role in his life and death. The giving away that is required of Jupiter manifested in his Jupiter and Saturn ādhāna viṁśottarī daśās between the age of 28 to his death at age 45. Rāhu is his BK and it is MKS in ayuṣ debility. Rāhu has dṛṣṭi on these grahas and played a significant role due to the charakāraka replacement period between Jupiter and Rāhu, and the foreign and philosophical influence it had in his life. AmK Jupiter and DK Saturn being in a Venusian sign, and Venus being AK in Karka and having dṛṣṭi on Vrṣabha, influenced his early interests and vocation as a poet, singer, and musician. Venus and Moon serve as remedial measures for Inayat in that they have rāśi dṛṣṭi on Jupiter and Saturn. Devī energy was within him. Venus is joined his Āruḍha lagna in Karka, giving him a soft and inviting image, while he struggled internally with fatigue from work, poor health and challenging emotions due to the constant divisiveness in his communities. Moon is the āruḍha lagna lord, but being in 12th house, a duṣthāna, he preferred to keep a quiet and silent mind as much as possible. I needed to retreat to restore his energy. Lagna lord Ketu and 12th lord Saturn joined Jupiter made him want to look inward, renounce and be still. He was challenged at every turn.

Meeting His Guru

In his natal chart, Rāhu is his BK aspecting MKS Jupiter and his AK Venus. He described his relationship with his guru as the most beautiful time in his life, stating he saw him in dreams prior to meeting him. Ve aspect from Karka is the Devī blessing. His guru, Syed Mohammed Hashim Madani, told him that wisdom must be assimilated through the heart, to empty the cup of the self, and to harmonize the East (Jupiter) and West (Saturn) through the music of the soul and Sufi wisdom. Wise words of his guru illustrate how the karmas and siddhis worked in unison to help his soul evolve. He met Madani in 1904 Ge/Aq. Mercury and Su in the 4th house of the heart. Mercury is astaṅgata and Sun is dighīna indicating his desire to purify and let go of ego, the empty cup of the self. Rāhu aspects AK Venus in the 5th house of bhakti, MKS Jupiter, and is the anitya of Moon in 12th house Kumbha. In Rā/Su, Inayat had a profound spiritual awakening, just before his guru died in 1908, and only four years after they met.

Brahmaṇa Rakṣasa

Jupiter is not only MKS in Inayat’s chart, but is cursed by the nodes and Saturn, even though Saturn is his siddhi graha. This indicates a Brahma Rakṣasa, meaning he has difficulty letting go of anger. Mars is 3rd house kāraka and aims to punish a native with Jupiter MKS. His Mars is well placed in 6th house Siṁha, giving him energy, drive and a disciplined nature, but managing anger was a task set before him. Mars brought him inimical situations. He was challenged by internal division within his own community, and external skepticism from the world, creating difficult situations for him. He was required to face this as a consequence of Jupiter in MKS. He wrote books teaching how to mangage anger. In the Mastery Through Accomplishment and The Book of Health, he discussed anger as a destructive force linked to the “fire element” and the undisciplined ego. He advised that one should count to ten before speaking when angry and emphasized that silence helps transmute this energy.

Travels Abroad

Since MKS invokes Rā energy, when the 12th lord Saturn daśā was activated, it caused him to travel to foreign lands. Moon 10L is Ke joined MKS Jupiter, taking him abroad for spiritual work, and Mercury 9th lords are 12th lords Saturn and Rāhu, taking him abroad for study, both of which he did in his travels to the U.S. and Europe.

As we look across the vargas, we see how Jupiter and the grahas joined in the 3rd house manifest in other areas of his life which add challenges or support to those aspects of his life.

Marriage

Jupiter, Rāhu and Saturn played a significant role in his marriage, which enabled him to fulfill his karma. Jupiter is not MKS in D9, and therefore gave some strength and support to his natal Jupiter. Inayat’s D9 shows that his wife, Ameena Begum, whom he met in New York, was critical to his success. He stated that she was his logistical, emotional and spiritual support, and that without her support he couldn’t bring his message to the world. Jupiter is in Siṁha lagna with 7th lord Rāhu indicating we see the Sun. Sun is in an amavasya yoga, which activates Jupiter in lagna. As Rāhu is 7th lord, it indicates a foreign spouse. It is in the 7th from its sign, joining Jupiter in lagna so we see the critical role his spouse played in supporting him.

Work

His D10 shows lagna lord Jupiter in siddhi yoga in 10th house with 10th lord Mercury, ucchanātha 8th lord Moon and A7. BK Rāhu has dṛṣṭi. He established an organization across the globe at the request of his guru. 5th lord Ma is joined Venus in the 12th house in ganḍānta yoga and joined A8 showing that even though he had success in his work, his spiritual mission was fraught with challenges from his students, associates, and family.

Health

Inayat Khan suffered from repeated episodes of pneumonia and physical exhaustion due to the rigorous demands of his global spiritual mission. Venus is the 8th lord in his natal chart, and while we expect rejuvenative powers from Venus, it is afflicted by Rāhu and Saturn, which indicates health concerns. These vāyu graha were activated during traveling. Rāhu is in ayuṣ debility and in MKS itself. In Ju/Sa daśā, Inayat started his travel west to the United States.

Saturn is the 12th lord yuti lagna lord Jupiter. Kāraka Venus has dṛṣṭi on 12th house and 3rd house. This is Li/Pi nārāyaṇa daśā. Pisces activates Jupiter and the subsequent health, work, and inimical situations related to his mission. Kāraka Mars and MKS Rāhu dṛṣṭi brought inimical situations from within the Sufi Order and external skepticism regarding his teachings. We see that 8th lord Venus joins prāṇa pada and has dṛṣṭi on Jupiter, Saturn and Ke are in the 8th house from Tula. While he transformed the globe with his spiritual teachings, he battled health  issues related to jala and vāyu tattva, namely pneumonia and poor health due to fatigue from a demanding work schedule and continuous travel. Tula has the A10 and graha dṛṣṭi of Sa and Rā, making him travel for work. To restore and increase the ākāśa tattva of Jupiter, siddhi graha Saturn supported his efforts. He believed that mystics must enter seclusion to allow the senses to recover from the constant, often involuntary, energy drain of waking life, such as the excessive visual stimulation of looking at things. He practiced controlling his breath to regulate energy flow, strengthened his will to maintain focus and power, and absorbed the electricity of the sphere through meditation and attunement with the cosmos. He also emphasized mental purification through specific postures and stillness, which still the mind and redirect attention away from the ego, thereby conserving and refining spiritual energy.

Pañcāṅga

Inayat was born in Kṛṣṇa pakṣa so the MKS will not naturally be overcome as Jupiter is a day strong graha. His vara lord Mercury is astaṅgata and vakri, so while his health suffers with multiple bouts of pneumonia, he continues to work and travel as it gives results in the 10th house and will not give up. Mercury is also MKS and joins dighīna Sun in the 4th house Mithuna, indicating lung problems. Jupiter is his karaṇa lord. His work involved teaching and sharing knowledge and wisdom. The MKS added the challenges he had in his work. He was working on behalf of his guru in spiritual endeavors, even though it brought much pain and suffering.

Charakāraka Replacement

BK Rāhu replaces AmK Jupiter. The work of the guru becomes his work. Between the ages of 32 and 44, he traveled abroad establishing his global Sufi movement and centers. During this time he experienced health issues, divisiveness and challenges abroad, but he also shared his wisdom of universal oneness and love in the world. He was determined to bring the ākāśa tattva across the globe.

Death

Jupiter and the karmic, siddhi graha of Saturn guided him on his path, orchestrating his life, focus and interactions. They played a role in enlightening him and the world, and also had a hand in his death. Inayat died in Pi/Le at age 45. Lord Jupiter is joined Rudra lord Saturn.

In D30V, Saturn and Jupiter are joined A8 and under papkaṭari yoga of Rāhu and Mars. Antardaśā Leo: Sun is lagna lord in the 8th house in Jupiter’s sign.

Lineage

Inayat Khan has 5th lord Moon in the 12th house, indicating that he is part of a paraṁparā and Jupiter MKS has a strong desire to give away his teachings. The greatest of these upadeśa he gave to his śiṣya who was his eldest son. His brothers, daughter, and grandson also succeeded him and continued his Sufi teachings. AL and 5th lord Mo in the 12th house indicates that he will be remembered after his death due to his successors.

Remedial Measure

Jupiter’s dispositor Venus is in koṇa bhāva. A Devī mantra would have benefitted him, specifically Durgā as Venus is in Karka.

ॐ नमश्चिण्डकायै नमः

Oṁ Namaścaṇḍikāyai

Illustration 2: Klaus Barbie – SS Officer, Gestapo Chief, Weapons and Drug Smuggler and Espionage.

Klaus Barbie is known as the “Butcher of Lyon”. He was a high-ranking SS officer and Gestapo chief in occupied France during World War II. His life is defined by his extreme brutality during the war, his controversial evasion of justice through Cold War intelligence networks, and his landmark 1987 trial.

Jupiter is MKS in Dhanu bhāva. It is in own sign so we expect the grace of Śiva to support. Oddly, it did support in that he continued to work into his 60’s and lived to be 77 years old. And while he didn’t feel the suffering directly, having no remorse for the death and destruction he caused, kāraka Mars, and Jupiter’s ucchanātha Moon, carried out the terrible crimes, in addition to, and on behalf of Jupiter. He caused the suffering of thousands to millions of Jews, and those in the French Resistance.

Rāhu’s energy is strong in his chart due to many charakāraka replacements, and became a trigger for his turn to the dark side. In Rā/Ma daśā, Klaus’ father died. Ma is in the 9H and in koṇa to PiK Su and Rā. He had planned to go to school for Theology, but due to being unemployed, he was conscripted into Reich Labour Service, and two years later joined the SS.

Jupiter is in dighīna from AK Mars, making Jupiter to weak to preserve life. Mars is in parivartana with Mercury, bringing Mars to Scorpio, a natural resting place for him at the tattva level, where he is less interested in wreaking havoc, but here it is in a maraṇa bhāva and can still wage war for Jupiter in the bhāvas where he is a kārakatva. Jupiter lords the 3rd and 6th bhāvas, duṣthāna bhāvas which can bring duṣkarma. These houses are lorded by Jupiter itself, and while he won’t destroy his own bhāvas, the kāraka Mars is willing to fight. Mars is restless in the inimical sign of Mithuna, and Jupiter’s nakṣatra lord Venus is debilitated, creating a perfect storm for aggression and diabolical activity.

Since Jupiter is in his own rāśi, we expect the grace of Śiva. His his ucchanātha Moon will take up the mantle of MKS. Moon is in an eclipse yoga with Āruḍha lagna and A7 in the 11th house Siṁha, the house of gains, but also danḍa, or punishment. Moon’s anitya Sun is nīca in lagna, making him use his leadership power for adharmic endeavors. Su is also in a pāpa koṇa with Rāhu and Mars, adding to the malefic influences on his intellect. Lagna anitya Venus is in debility in the 12th house, indicating his low morals and scruples with many dark secrets and hidden enemies.

Per pacakādi sambandha, Jupiter does not like the 6th house from it and those people will be the ones who suffer significantly from Jupiter’s MKS placement. The 6th from the 3rd bhāva is the 8th house, which is Karka rāśi. Lord Moon is in an eclipse yoga with A7 and dṛṣṭi from MKS Jupiter and Rāhu. As the head of the Gestapo, he tortured, deported and executed thousands of Jews and those in the French Resistance during WWII. As Moon represents society, and with the malefic influences, we see that he wanted to bring the shadow of an eclipse to their lives, with many partners in crime. MKS brings Rāhu energy into the chart, and in Klaus’ chart he also has four charakāraka replacements, which adds to the Rāhu energy throughout his chart. His Jupiter MKS, in cooperation with his eclipsed Moon, promoted death instead of life, and ignorance instead of enlightenment.

For Jupiter MKS, the siddhi bīja is Saturn, and we see this graha is vakri in the 8th house from lagna. Saturn in the 8th house increases longevity. It will offer opportunities to support learning lessons from his maraṇa experience, but given his state of mind and adharmic actions, the siddhi he received enabled him to seek out ways to increase his longevity. Jupiter and Saturn are in dursambandha in his chart. It was during Ju/Sa utpanna viṁśottarī daśā that Klaus joined the Nazis. This was in Sg/Ta Nārāyaṇa daśā, the same placements of these grahas. Ju/Ke (Sg/Sc) saw him promoted to head of the Gestapo. In 1947, in Ju/Mo (Cp/Sc), he began his intelligence work with the United States government, who had hired him as a counter-intelligence officer. Saturn in the 10th house from the Moon, and Moon and Venus being afflicted and debilitated in the 11th and 12th houses shows his punishing and secretive work.

The prevalent Rāhu energy in his chart is present in his D10 with Rā in ayuṣ debility in the lagna and the aforementioned nīca Venus with the same sthāna and joined Saturn in the 11th house. As nīca grahas are beneficial in D10, we can see that malevalence helped him rise in the ranks.

In 1950, his AmK Saturn matured at the beginning of its daśā, where the replacement with AK Mars was complete. Saturn now took the role of fulfilling his soul’s desire and as the siddhi bīja, he had a talent of finding ways to survive. Within a year of the daśā starting, he created a false identity, with the help of the U.S. Counter Intelligence Corps, and escaped to Bolivia. In Bolivia, he was involved in weapon and drug dealings. He was also recruited by the German intelligence in 1965 but maintained links with the CIA. In Saturn daśa (Aquarius Nārāyaṇa daśā), there were two absentia trial dates where he was sentenced to death, but he was still evading his captors.

In Ketu daśā (Le/Cp), a trial was held in France and he was the first in that country to be charged with crimes against humanity. Jupiter is the jīva kāraka, and Moon yuti Ketu carried out the MKS deeds. He died in Ke/Sa (Le/Cn). The same Moon that orchestrated his terrible deeds also took his life.

Remedial Measures

As Jupiter is in own sign, we expect the grace of Śiva to bless him. Jupiter is Īśāna himself and thus the śaḍakṣari mantra would have benefitted him.

ॐ नमः fशवाय

Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya

Seeing that Jupiter gave his MKS experiences to the Moon, praying to Ma Śakti in the form of Durgā could help him treat humanity with more compassion. This 10 syllable mantra would help him to remove negativity and evil forces, bring peace of mind, and protection. His 10th house Karka would have been transformed with the three śaktis supporting him.

ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं कामुण्डये fवच्चे

Oṁ Aiṁ Hrīṁ Klīṁ Camundaye Vicche
