Based on 2015 Paper: Matching the couples seminar by Pandit Sanjay Rath
In modern astrology, compatibility is often reduced to “matching trines” or simple software scores. However, true Jyotiṣa—as taught in the Agni Purāṇa and shared by Pandit Sanjay Rath—reveals a far more profound spiritual architecture. Marriage is not just a social contract; it is a bond witnessed by the eternal fire, Agni.
Marriage is based on Śukra (Venus), who rules the South-East direction. Because Agni is the deity of the South-East, the fire becomes the eternal witness (sākṣin) of every union. While many focus on the 7th house to see the “event” or ceremony of marriage, the 4th house (the 10th from the 7th) determines its success. Without a shared home (4th), the marriage loses its success; this is why long-distance marriages are often viewed as fundamentally broken in this tradition. Furthermore, a man with many planets in his 4th house can be an incredibly demanding “king” in the home, often requiring more than one person could provide.
Your 7th Lord represents your Gati—the path, gate, or course you walk in life. To stay together, a couple must walk the same road; if one flies while the other walks, the partnership fails.
- Chara (Movable) Signs: The Śakti Path (Mother Durga).
- Sthira (Fixed) Signs: The Śaiva Path (Father Śiva).
- Dvisvabhāva (Dual) Signs: The Vaiṣṇava Path (The Guru Viṣṇu).
For harmony, the couple’s 7th Lords should be in similar sign types. When paths diverge, worshiping the deity of the sign (Durga, Śiva, or Viṣṇu) can bring the couple back to a shared road.
The Agni Purāṇa (121.2) defines specific mutual placements between the bride and groom’s Lagnas (ascendants) that dictate the flow of affection (prīti):
- The Forbidden (The Flaws):
- Ṣaḍāṣṭaka (6-8): The worst match, known as “Setting Jupiter“. It destroys wisdom (buddhi) and leads to unending battles and debts.
- Dvirdvādaśa (2-12): Known as “Setting Venus“. This is an “ATM marriage”—purely financial with no soul or love.
- Trikoṇa (5-9): Often mistaken for good, this creates a generational gap. Partners treat each other like parent and child rather than equals, which lacks specific marital affection.
- The Recommended:
- Sama-saptaka (1-7): The most congenital and balanced.
- Kendras (4-10): Partners who work for each other (Paraspara kāraka).
- Tri-Lābha (3-11): A natural friendship based on shared joy and “gossip”.
Critically, the Lagneśa (Lagna Lord) can override these signs. If the lords are friendly or the same, even a 2-12 or 5-9 match can be saved, as the lords represent the human soul’s logic and decision-making.
Vedic wisdom makes a vital distinction between Ratī (pleasure) and Prīti (affection). Most marriages before age 32 are driven by Ratī (sexual passion). However, for a marriage to survive old age, it must evolve into Prīti (grace and kindness). To heal these transitions, specific Bīja Mantras are used:
- Klīṁ: The seed of desire (Kāma).
- Ślīṁ: The seed of pleasure (Ratī), used to get married.
- Dhlīṁ: The seed of affection (Prīti), used to keep a marriage.
Beyond basic matching, one must look for “shocks” in the chart:
- Bādhaka: Malefics in the Bādhaka sign cause unseen obstacles and “lightning bolts” in a relationship.
- Gaṇḍānta: The volatile boundaries where fire meets water. The Hora Gaṇḍānta (the boundary between Virgo and Libra) is particularly dangerous for marriage.
- Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna (MKS): Positions where planets “die” (e.g., Moon in the 8th, Sun in the 12th). If your spouse’s planet falls in an MKS house in your chart, they may feel like they are “dying” or drained whenever they are with you.
We find the Moon sign of the spouse by looking at the 7th Lord (from the D1 chart) in the Navāṁśa (D9). The spouse’s sign will generally be in a trine, 1st/7th, or the exaltation/debility sign of that lord. This reveals the marriage’s destiny: Love (Trines), Dharma (1/7), Rājayoga (Exaltation), or Duryoga (Debility).
Furthermore, the Vivāha Tithi (the “marriage date” calculated from the distance between the couple’s Moons) determines the flow of energy and the nature of the children produced.

- JFK and Jacqueline Kennedy: A 2-12 match with Bādhaka issues. JFK (Mercury) could never understand Jacqueline (Venus), leading to public battles and “electric shocks” (Vajrapāta).

- Bill Clinton: His 12th Lord (Neṣṭā Graha) Mercury was in digbala and stronger than his 7th Lord. This configuration, combined with a Bāhu-Strī Yoga (multiple women) in the Navāṁśa, created a life where “outside” relationships were a constant pull.
Ketu in the 7th: Often seen in spiritual charts, Ketu represents a “headless” heart. While it can lead to marital mistakes because one doesn’t “use their head,” it is also a path to Mokṣa through humble, heart-led service.
If a marriage suffers from Ṣaḍāṣṭaka or Dvirdvādaśa, the ancient remedy is simple yet powerful: light a Ghee lamp at the Tulsi plant every evening. This lamp reaches Śiva, Durga, and the Guru, acting as a continuous shield that prevents divorce and household strife. For those struggling with children (progeny), singing the Gāyatrī Mantra with the Jala Bīja is recommended.
By returning to these Agni Purāṇa roots, we move from mere personality matching to the Sacred Geometry of Connection.
